In Chamba, situated the beautiful
Rang Mahal palace, which was built by Raja Umed Singh in the mid 18th
century. An interesting mix of colonial and Sarcenic architure styles,
this palace is now counted among the heritage palace hotels of Himachal
Pradesh. Exquisite examples of wall paintings in the Punjab Hills style,
depicting the life and times of Lord Krishna embellish the walls of the
palace. May be this is the reson why Rang Mahal is populalry known as "The
Painted Palace".
There's a reflection of Mughal influence also present in the palace's
architecture. Construtional additions were later on made by Jit Singh
and Charat Singh. Rang Mahal remained women's residence until 1947 and
now houses a college.
Also known as the old palace, Rang Mahal also houses the Himachal
Emporium from where tourists can purchase souvenirs such as the famous
Chamba rumals - small cloths , a traditional craft where a small cloth
featuring very fine silk embroidery, is executed by the women of
Chamba, and dates back almost 1,000 years.

The emporium is open from Monday to Saturday fro 10.00 a.m. to 1.00
p.m. and 2.00 to 5.00 p.m.
